Each week, Christ the Good Shepherd Catholic Community produces the CGS FAMILY Guide, which is the means of lifelong Faith Formation and catechesis for our parishioners of all ages. The section of the CGS Guide known as the Points of Understanding are taken from the Curriculum Framework for Lifelong Faith Formation written by the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston and promulgated by our archbishop, Daniel Cardinal DiNardo. It is a well-organized summary of our Catholic Faith and what we strive to know and understand by each age level.
Our CGS FAMILY Guides are designed in such a way that the points of understanding are presented at a progressively deeper level of thought, beginning with birth through childhood, adolescence and concluding with adulthood. The Points of Understanding clearly state the Church’s teaching. They can be used as a tool for conversation starters, family discussions, and as a means to unite the family or small Faith Group under one theme. At every grade & age, you can use all the points that came earlier (for example, 8th graders can focus on all the points from birth to 8th grade; adults can use all of them!) Additionally, you will notice that each age level is exploring the same or similar topic each week. Though these are divided by developmental level, we encourage everyone to know the more foundational points to grow in understanding of the more complex ones.
Don’t feel badly if you don’t already know many of these things. What’s important is that you are open to growing in understanding. Sometimes the most basic things we need to know we learn very early in life, and sometimes we need to re-learn them!
The numerical references given each week indicate the section of the Curriculum Framework for Lifelong Faith Formation from which these teachings are taken.
