To incorporate the true vision of
Renewing the Vision: A Framework for Catholic Youth Ministry.
In short the USCCB realized that there was a huge separation of what we title “Youth Ministry” and “Catechesis”.
St. Pope John Paul II addressed the youth with these words:
"What is needed today is a Church which knows how to respond to the expectations of young people. Jesus wants to enter into dialogue with them and, through his body which is the Church, to propose the possibility of a choice which will require a commitment of their lives. As Jesus with the disciples of Emmaus, so the Church must become today the traveling companion of young people ... (Youth: Sent to Proclaim True Liberation, World Youth Day 1995, Philippines)."
Renewing the Vision
takes up the Holy Father’s challenge by focusing the Church’s ministry with adolescents on three essential goals:
(1) Empowering young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today
(2) Drawing young people to responsible participation in the life, mission, and work of the faith community; and
(3) Fostering the personal and spiritual growth of each young person. To accomplish these goals it will take a practical framework for utilizing the resources of the entire faith community and integrating ministry with adolescents and their families into the total life and mission of the Church.
The (tellos) or goal of all Youth Ministry is entering into dialogue with the culture of youth and infuse it with the gospel message. Theologically it is called incarnational or enculturation. This is what the Church Fathers did, as Our Lord did taking on humanity. It is a mixture of catechesis with what the youth will respond to.
